Daniel continued celebrating his birthday on Saturday, May 9th. We ran some errands; including picking up the hockey tickets he received for his birthday and then metroed into DC.
It was too early to head over to Verizon Center in Chinatown so we decided to participate in the EU's Embassy Week. This is something we always seem to miss. Every year for one day the European embassies have an open house. Last year we went to Italy and Denmark where they each had food, music and an enormous amount of information about each country. This year we went to Germany, www.germany.info.
It is gorgeous modernist architecture, the building above was designed by Egon Eiermann and opened in May of 1964. The German's threw a great party! We wrote on a fake me out Berlin wall, tried samples of food including wine and chocolate (an unexpected surprise), listened to German club music and we won a few prizes! Someday we really hope to get to Germany; some of Daniel's family lives there.
It was a pretty warm day and we were getting hungry so we ate a nice dinner in Chinatown before the big game (5) with a restaurant full of Capitals fans. Once inside the arena we were able to watch the teams warm up and I took some great pictures of the players and one very happy husband!
I have always liked hockey and have been to only one game prior to this one, ironically with Daniel! I would not call myself a FAN because I could take it or leave it honestly.
BUT not anymore! This was the most exciting, exhilarating, jump out of your seat and yell kind of sporting event I have ever been to! The marketing folks at the CAPS really have got it down and the team is very much a team. They are something that Washingtonians can be very proud of!
We tied and the game went into overtime and this is when we lost. It hurt so bad, seriously. The arena went silent and the fans left. It was so final but we had hope there is always game 6.
